Pregnancy Symptoms: Is being Cold a Pregnancy Symptom

Many pregnant women experience cold chills, while some have hot flushes. Feeling warmer during pregnancy is common due to increased hormonal function, as well as fast-working metabolism. So feeling cold doesn’t imply that something’s wrong. Rather, being cold is considered a normal symptom during pregnancy.

When you’re pregnant for the first time, it’s impossible to know what’s going to happen in the next stage. But don’t worry, as these feelings of uncertainty are totally normal, especially for first-timers.

When I was first pregnant, I went through a rollercoaster ride of emotions and cravings that only involved carbs. Feeling nauseous became a habitual thing for me, and when it came to cold symptoms, they would grow intense at night, usually after 7 pm. I used to feel so cold that I would randomly start shaking.

I also encountered a few other unusual pregnancy symptoms that I thought were health-related, but after confirming with my doctor, I learned that they were just normal pregnancy symptoms that I was unnecessarily stressing about.

Why Pregnant Women May Feel Cold During Pregnancy?

I come across a few women in my family and friends who have faced a similar unusual pregnancy symptom and consulted my gynecologist. I’ve learned a few reasons behind the cause of it. Below, I’ve mentioned a few reasons why you may feel cold during your pregnancy stages and whether or not you should address it at once:

Fever caused by an Infection

Fever and high temperature are some of the first symptoms of an infection, and at times, this can lead to cold chills. Or, you could be having the normal flu or viral infection. It’s a must that you get it checked out to ensure it’s nothing serious, especially if your temperature is above 37.8 degrees.

Anxiety

Anxiety is an uneasy feeling that leads to constant worry and affects your body. Such feelings are very common during pregnancy, and it is important to take control of it before it gets worse. Sometimes, this could lead to panic attacks that include symptoms such as chest pain, sweating, fast heartbeat, and dizziness. These symptoms could cause you to feel extremely cold.

Iron Deficiency

When pregnant, many ladies tend to suffer from an iron deficiency known as anemia. This is when your body doesn’t have healthy red blood cells, which generally slows down your body process. As a result, you feel cold. You must consult your doctor to know if it’s anemia or something major that is causing you to feel cold.

How to Treat Cold Chills During Pregnancy?

There are a few things I used to do that helped raise my body temperature when I used to feel suddenly cold during my pregnancy. Here are a few:

  • Consume Iron Supplements prescribed by your doctor to feel warmer. They help maintain your baby’s health as well but make sure the supplements don’t contain any artificial ingredients, and it’s best for you and your baby to stick to plant-based iron supplements.
  • Wear warmer clothes like leggings, and throw on some extra layers.
  • Maintain a nutritious diet, which is also good for your baby
  • Get as much rest as you can
