Raise your hand if you saw baby talc powder in the bathroom cabinet of your mom or your grandmother’s home at least once. I know I have! The baby talc powder was launched by J&J back in 1894, and since then it has been used by millions of people around the world. This is a key example of the power of marketing.

Growing up, I remember my mom used it in her beauty routine, so I was using it as well. I never suffered from hyper sweating, but still used it for my underarms. It smell nice like I was wearing perfume. In addition, my friends and I used it all the time too (even on our feet!). We were using this stuff before putting on our socks, especially after the gym or play time. Mind you, I was about 10 years old.  We did this all the time, well before people were able to understand that using this product was going to cause severe health issues.

What Is Talc?

Talc powder is a natural mineral that has been used since the Egyptian ages for many different things. In recent years, manufactures use it not only to make baby talc powder, but also in deodorant and make up. In the beginning, J&J was launching its baby talc powder product saying that it was going to be good for preventing baby rashes, eliminating odor, and adding moisture to your intimate area.

The reality is that they did a great job with their marketing campaign. For many years it has been used by all of us. Up until the law suits started to get more prevalent, leading to the halt in its commercialization across the USA and Canada. Though this may be good news, what are the repercussions, if any?

Fun Fact: My aunt is very into natural products like me. After talking with her recently, she told me that she actually knew about the risk of using Baby talc powder and never used it. But at that time, it was dependent on personal choice since the product was absolutely a must go item.

But there are always better baby talc powder alternatives out there. With the summer approaching it is a great time to switch to a talc alternative that is natural, but still has the same benefits without any health concerns.

My Secret List

Most popular ingredients that you can find in safer alternatives to talc include:

  • Cornstarch: This is definitely the most popular alternative. It is very easy to find at your local store and has the same absorbent and moisturizing properties of the talc powder.
  • Tapioca Starch: Tapioca starch has properties that absorb oil while moisturizing your skin while still keeping you dry. This can be found in either your grocery store or on Amazon.
  • Arrowroot Starch: This is all natural and contains some properties of cornstarch. It is typically used for people that are allergic or sensitive to cornstarch. It can be found either in your grocery store or online.
  • Kaolin Clay: Kaolin clay is a very popular ingredient, used in many cosmetics products. However, it has the same absorbent action of talc powder and mostly used by people with sensitive skin. To buy it pure, the easiest way to find it is online.
  • Baking Soda: This is a very common household ingredient that you might already have. It is great for absorbing odor, but used in its natural form can be very abrasive. So, make sure to mix it with corn starch or kaolin clay, especially if you have sensitive skin.

For easy reference, brands such as Honest Beauty and Burt’s Bees offer products with these ingredients.

Conclusion

Until today, as much as J&J is saying that one of the reasons why they discontinued the product is linked to the COVID-19, and cutting out products that are not highly performant, people still use it. It might be due to the fact that the mentality of having that dry feeling is important in order to feel right with yourself. However, keep in mind that there is always another route you can take that is better. Use my secret tips above so you can get all the same outcomes from a baby product, but without the unwanted side effects, it can cause.
