Yes or No: Should You Get a Baby Jumper For Your Baby?
Baby jumper seem like a fun way to add some entertainment to your toddler’s life and get them on their feet from an early age. But from my side, baby jumpers are a BIG NO, and I made sure my baby girl never grew attached to them.
Baby jumpers aren’t all that bad, but I firmly believe you should allow your child to develop naturally instead of relying on objects such as baby jumpers. If you want your toddler’s legs to grow stronger on their own, it’s best to let them take their time. Don’t force them to get on their feet by putting them in baby jumpers.
Every baby grows at a different pace, and the last thing you should do as a mother is to compare your toddler’s growth to that of others. If you’re still not sure whether you should get a baby jumper for your baby or not, read on. I’ll go over reasons why I don’t like using them. Of course, I’ll mention other baby growth methods you can rely on.
Why Baby Jumpers Aren’t a Good Consideration For Your Toddler?
1. Unable to Develop a Sense of Control
When you keep your little one in a baby jumper, they don’t have much sense of control as they are unable to look at their feet. Learning how to balance is an essential sense for babies to develop, and baby jumpers prevent them from doing so.
2. Tip-Toeing Causes Discomfort
At first, your baby will tiptoe more often before they can get their feet on the ground in a baby jumper. In a baby jumper, toddlers have trouble seeing where they put their feet. Moreover, they instinctually try to hold on for stability, which is difficult in a baby jumper. This puts a lot of pressure on their toes and causes discomfort.
3. Less Muscle Engagement
It’s important for toddlers to engage in proper muscle movement, and baby jumpers don’t offer much space for your baby to do that. When sitting in a baby jumper, your baby automatically comes in a swayback position, decreasing abdominal and gluteal muscle engagement.
4. Poor Body Posture
Your little one can develop a poor body posture from an early age if you’re constantly making them sit in a baby jumper. When sitting in the jumper, your baby’s ligaments hang in an uncomfortable position and cause the back and shoulder to hunch back. Your baby may sense this as being the correct position to walk and stand in as they are unaware of the right position.
What Alternatives Do I Use Instead?
As mentioned earlier, I don’t believe in forcing babies to do something against their own pace. Hence, I don’t particularly appreciate using baby jumpers. Instead, I am all for the Montessori Pikler Triangle. The Montessori Pikler triangle is a safer and natural developmental tool for babies. The main purpose of this child-friendly tool is to develop physical strength and allowing free movements. My baby girl loved using the Montessori Pikler triangle and grew her motor skills at her own pace.
